  मथुरा

मथुरा श्री कृष्ण की जन्मभूमि है यहाँ पर भगवान श्री कृष्ण ने जन्म लिआ था. ये सूरसेन देश की राजधानी है. मथुरा को हिस्टोरिकल प्लेस भी कहा जाता है. पौराणिक साहित्य में मथुरा को अनेक नामों से संबोधित किया गया है जैसे- शूरसेन नगरी, मधुपुरी, मधुनगरी, मधुरा आदि.वाराणसी, प्रयाग, कौशाम्बी, हस्तिनापुर,कन्नौज आदि कितने ही ऐसे स्थान हैं, परन्तु यह तालिका तब तक पूर्ण नहीं हो सकती जब तक इसमें मथुरा का समावेश न किया जाय। यह आगरा से दिल्ली की ओर और दिल्ली से आगरा की ओर क्रमश: 58 किलोमीटर उत्तर-पश्चिम एवं 145 किलोमीटर दक्षिण-पश्चिम में यमुना के किनारे राष्ट्रीय राजमार्ग 2 पर स्थित है।वाल्मीकि रामायण में मथुरा को मधुपुर या मधुदानव का नगर कहा गया है तथा यहाँ लवणासुर की राजधानी बताई गई है इस नगरी को इस प्रसंग में मधुदैत्य द्वारा बसाई, बताया गया है। लवणासुर, जिसको शत्रुघ्न ने युद्ध में हराकर मारा था इसी मधुदानव का पुत्र था इससे मधुपुरी या मथुरा का रामायण-काल में बसाया जाना सूचित होता है। रामायण में इस नगरी की समृद्धि का वर्णन है।इस नगरी को लवणासुर ने भी सजाया संवारा था। दानव, दैत्य, राक्षस आदि जैसे संबोधन विभिन्न काल में अनेक अर्थों में प्रयुक्त हुए हैं, कभी जाति या क़बीले के लिए, कभी आर्य अनार्य सन्दर्भ में तो कभी दुष्ट प्रकृति के व्यक्तियों के लिए। प्राचीनकाल से अब तक इस नगर का अस्तित्व अखण्डित रूप से चला आ रहा है।
मथुरा में चारो दिशाओ में शिव मंदिर हे पूर्व में पिपलेश्वर का, दक्षिण में रंगेश्वर का और उत्तर में गोकर्णेश्वर का और पश्चिम में भूतेश्वर महादेव का मन्दिर है, मथुरा को आदि वाराह भूतेश्वर क्षेत्र के नाम से भी जाना जाता है.
यहाँ मुरलीमनोहर, कृष्ण-बलदेव, अन्नपूर्णा, धर्मराज, गोवर्द्धननाथ आदि कई मंदिर हैं।
मथुरा में हर एकादशी और अक्षय नवमी में परिक्रमा लगाई जाती हे इसका बहुत महात्तम हे। इस परिक्रमा को तीन वन की भी कही जाती है.
मथुरा में संगीत का प्रचलन बहुत पुराना है, बांसुरी ब्रज का प्रमुख वाद्य यंत्र है। भगवान श्रीकृष्ण की बांसुरी को जन–जन जानता है और इसी को लेकर उन्हें 'मुरलीधर' और 'वंशीधर' आदि नामों से पुकारा जाता है।
मथुरा में १२ वन हे जिससे द्वादश वन के नाम से जाना जाता है.
यहाँ स्थापत्य तथा मूर्ति कला के विकास का सबसे महत्त्वपूर्ण युग कुषाण काल के प्रारम्भ से गुप्त काल के अन्त तक रहा। यद्यपि इसके बाद भी ये कलायें 12वीं शती के अन्त तक जारी रहीं। इसके बाद लगभग 350 वर्षों तक मथुरा कला का प्रवाह अवरूद्ध रहा, पर 16वीं शती से कला का पुनरूत्थान साहित्य, संगीत तथा चित्रकला के रूप में दिखाई पड़ने लगता है।

Mathura is the birthplace of Lord Krishna, Lord Krishna was born here. This is the country's capital of Surasen. Mathura is also called Historical Place. Music in Mathura is very old, the flute is the main instrument of Braj. The people know Lord Krishna's flute and it is called by the names like 'Muralidhar' and 'Vanshidhar'.
Mathura has 12 forests, which is known as Dvashash forest.
Here is the most important period of architecture and the development of statue art till the end of the Gupta period from the beginning of the Kushan period. However, still these works continued till the end of the 12th century.
